This year, we got introduced to VEX AIR, the official competition built entirely around drones.
For years, VEX games have focused on ground bots, but AIR changes the rules, literally adding a new dimension. Teams will now face challenges that involve navigating obstacles, flying through tunnels, and precisely dropping objects onto elevated scoring structures like Drop Towers and Pole Towers.
It’s a whole new arena: speed, stability, and precision are now as important as raw power.
The field features six unique scoring structures, including a Ring Tunnel for aerial maneuvers and a Drop Zone where missions reach their climax. Teams will have to master both flying and programming. In this game, altitude equals points.
Builders are already sketching wild drone designs and discussing flight strategies on forums. Some are thrilled about the bold step forward, while others are eager to see how teams will adapt to the challenges of indoor flight and precise scoring.
One thing’s for sure: VEX AIR feels like the start of something historic: a game that could change the future of robotics competitions.
